Hi Marcus,

Sorry for not posting anything lately. I was very busy with my PhD. Musaab is also busy with his Masters. I haven't seen any of Musaab's designs yet and I think he is working hard on his Masters report at the moment.

I'm in the process of writing up and preparing for a talk at the moment, that is why I can't work anymore on the model. I talked to Mike Phillips and Chris Speed and they said it is fine for me to stop at this stage as the workshop is meant to be part of the Masters course anyway.

I am also going to have my model printed. So maybe we can have my model as a representation of work in progress (or early stages of the development of the ideas that we talked about) and your final model as the finish product in the exhibition if you like.

Just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten the blog and our work! But I have spent time reading and trying to think about my project as a whole... Finished one book today and will probably begin modelling tomorrow again.

I think that could be a very good point if we produce a poster to go with the printed model - we should probably try to catch each of our sketch models from different angles in the pictures for the poster.

Regarding your model: I think it's good that you've thought about including all different aspects, it feels like we both could collect things within each other's models to make them stronger. One thought I have, comparing them both, is that my model might be too reduced (lack of detail), while your model might lack constraint (some elements feel randomized). This apart from the other aspects we've discussed. Do you agree?

These are different angles of the same model. These images together emphasize the emergence of systems where each image plays a role in a sequence of multi "frozen behaviour". The relationships (connectivity, interactions...etc.) between these sections of frozen behaviour themselves and between the environment will form the whole.

Hi again.

We met Shaun today, and it was decided that the new date for delivering the model is on the 2nd of February. So we still have time to work!

Let's continue blogging, and it's definitely time to get some Musaab stuff posted also! As Sana said - let's just enjoy the process together, as much as we can.

Sana: I've been thinking about what you said about the weaving... Maybe it shouldn't take over too much. Although it's an important part of our pictures, it might not be the most interesting to represent "again". Focusing on the layers and the different aspects could probably generate a more interesting model.

Something worth mentioning from the meeting today is that the model could be printed in different parts which are merged together afterwards - if we want to get away from the boundaries of the box. We are also free to attach things to the model, or attach the model to things. Might be worth keeping in mind...

I think I will build a new model from scratch now, and try to consider the experiences we've had during the work so far.

I don't know how you both feel at the moment, but I'm kind of confused. I guess that is a part of this process, and I'm sure we will come up with something good in the end.

Hi Marcus,

I’m thinking of my model as a multidimensional object. I tried to incorporate sharpness and articulation from one angle, and smoothness and fluidity from another angle. I tried to create spaces in between where voids play a significant role in the process of the creation of the dividing layers in a context.

I’ll post some more images from different angles.

I was thinking about what you’ve said about spreading the particles, I think we don’t need them. The different readings that you get from the different angles are enough representations to different worlds around the model.

Hi again!

Sana: Thanks! Yes, I was looking at your model and tried to pick up some things to bring our designs closer to each other. I did that as an attempt to include as many ideas as possible.

I agree with the possible problem; that the weaving might be too much of a representation of the actual umbrella. I can't say that I know if i think this is good or bad, yet...

Regarding how to continue - I will meet Shaun tomorrow and will ask him about deadlines and stuff. Maybe that could help us decide how to work on, and if we have time for it...

I'll post some more thoughts tomorrow, after the meeting.

The only thing about your model is that you mastered the weaving but maybe by doing this it became a representation of a piece of textile under the electron microscope (with creativity and a lot of exaggeration). This might shadow the impact of the umbrella as being a dividing layer in the environment.

Marcus, good one!

I like the weaving in this model. I don't know if you had a look at mine but we clearly have the same direction with different designs and I think this is healthy. This is what a process is all about. Every time we process the same ideas and we come up with different designs. We can make endless attempts and it is all part of the evolution of the process where systems emerge.

I think we can set a date for our group to finalize things but I would love to keep on evolving the design and maybe we can try to reach a cross object between you, me and Musaab.

I also would like to include all attempts in our poster presentation and the theme of process and system will be definitely clearer by that.

Tried to get away from my "nordic purity" and increase the complexity of the model. This is how it looks at the moment. The words I've tried to focus on are: folding, sphere (not the shape; the situation), weaving, collecting - protecting (2 sides), divide (cut through space), exaggerate.

I've been thinking about spreading the particles... I don't know if it's necessary in my model - the threads are kind of "scooping" through the air, like they are used to collect things (look at the ends). What do you think? I will give the scattering a try, anyway...

Marcus, good start. The weaving needs more work but the particles that you scattered on the surface were just right.

I've been just stretching my previous attempt a bit just to get more of the linearity as well as the big curve in the top part of the design to get a bit more of the umbrella feel. It needs the particles though, and I was thinking of scattering them on the outer surface of the big curve only to emphasize the idea of the dividing surface between one environment and another.

I understand that this is probably not even a printable model, but it illustrates some things that could be worth thinking about...

The weaving can definitely be developed more in this one, but I thought this image was worth showing, since it contains another aspect: the folding of the umbrella. The "waves" also work together in another way. One side is more safe, and the other is more exposed (which of course can be developed way further). But I found the folding aspect interesting.

Hi Musaab and Sana! Hope both of you've had a nice holiday.

Sana: nice start!

Some confused thoughts: What do you think about rotating the model so that the "divider" is vertical instead? Or maybe diagonal? Maybe that could be a way to emphasize the two sides, like the sides of a wall or a screen. Or is it important to keep the horizontality for the idea of the umbrella? Like a roof... (I'm just thinking out loud here, maybe it's a really bad idea)

Maybe the two sides should differ more, to emphasize the different qualities (beneath and above the umbrella)?

I will also try to post some sketches soon - pictures say much more than my words just did.

I would also like to add that I think it could be a good idea that we all write down our thoughts here, without considering if they are good or bad. Just sharing and let things develop.

Musaab: just posting a comment I sent in an e-mail to Sana, regarding her sketches.

My comment to Sana: it could be interesting to add some focus on the "sphere" of the umrella, emphasising that it is a sort of container or something that cuts through space (as you said, a dividing layer). That would also bring the non-electron scale qualities of the umbrella into the model... It could be explored in the way you suggested, and maybe also through trying to shape the model as a whole... Just a thought. Looking at your sketches, it feels like one step to take could be to "take control" over the shapes, but of course still try to keep the exaggerated flows.

Musaab and Marcus, just to get the ball rolling, here are some images of a sketch model.

- Exaggerating the layers and bringing in the process of weaving.

- Playing with the idea of scale (at the moment the idea of scale is represented by the layers of exaggeration but this definitely needs further development).

- Suggestion: maybe we can create different shapes and scales of objects to scatter on some of the hills and valleys of the model (not to dominate but to emphasize the idea of the umbrella – as a dividing layer between the user and the environment).
